The present project is a continuation of the “Wolf monitoring program in the implantation area of the Alto Minho I wind farm and the Wolf research and conservation project in Northwestern Portugal” initiated in 2006.
The goal is to survey the population and study its ecology to obtain necessary knowledge to correctly and efficiently apply measures intended for wolf conservation.
Research methods and techniques used in this project aim to collect the following information:
1. Annual estimates of reproductive success and wolf population size;
2. Productivity and mortality estimates;
3. Analysis of wolf pack spatial organization;
4. Determination of wolf movements within wolf pack territories;
5. Location and characterization of activity centers with reproduction;
6. Analysis of habitat connectivity and identification of dispersion corridors;
7. Determination of rate, direction and success of wolf dispersion;
8. Definition of wolf conservation measures.
ACHLI is responsible for the general coordination of the project and the Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources of the University of Porto (CIBO-UP) is responsible for the scientific coordination and execution.
